smart is the first car brand with its sights set on a clean-cut switchover from combustion engines to electric drive: from 2020 the company plans to exclusively sell smart models with a battery-electric drive. The North American market has already switched, with the UK following in 2019 and the rest of the world is expected to change soon afterwards. Even today, smart electric drive models (combined power consumption: 13.1 - 12.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) make opting into electric mobility more attractive than ever before. This is because they combine the agility of the smart with local emission-free driving. Back in 2017 at the International Frankfurt Motor Show, smart presented the smart vision EQ fortwo – an electric and autonomous vision for highly efficient and flexible local public transport. And with the new smart experienc-e app electric mobility can be experienced interactively.

The smart vision EQ fortwo offers a new solution for individualised, highly flexible and highly efficient local public transport. The autonomously driving electric one-off vehicle presents a consistent concept for urban mobility and car sharing of the future. It picks up its passengers directly from their chosen location and has no steering wheel or pedals. It is the first vehicle to embody all four pillars of the CASE strategy: "Connected", "Autonomous", "Shared" and "Electric".

"The smart vision EQ fortwo is our vision for urban mobility of the future; it is the most radical car sharing concept car ever to be developed: fully autonomous, highly communicative, friendly, extensively customisable and, of course, electric", says Annette Winkler, Head of smart.

This move ensures smart will be the first mainstream manufacturer to offer wholly electric portfolio. To support this move smart electric cars were rebranded to EQ, Daimler’s moniker for their electric division.
