The models in question are the Ford Transit and Transit Custom. Currently, these vehicles’ engines are paired with manual gearboxes, but now customers will be able to opt for six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. SelectShift enables manual gear-shifting, allowing for complete control over the process by the driver. This is operated by flicking a gear lever-mounted switch.
EcoBlue diesel engines with power outputs of 128bhp and 168bhp can be specified with the new automatic gearbox, which has been custom-engineered for use in Transit vehicles.
This innovation is based upon a design used in hard-working front-wheel-drive vehicles in North America that typically produce a peak torque of 415Nm. The European equivalent will feature a torque converter and external housing that is designed to maximise refinement. Automatic transmission has been fine-tuned to exactly match the levels of torque produced by Ford’s EcoBlue engines.
Specially tailored to the Transit, automatic transmission is electronically controlled, enabling rapid and smooth gear changes. Other benefits offered include improved fuel efficiency. CO2 emissions levels as low as 174g/km are achievable too, an improvement of 5g/km over engines paired with manual transmission. What’s more, optimal efficiency is delivered automatically because transmission can determine the elevation of the road surface and the weight of the vehicle’s load.
Ford Transit vehicles are already noted for their fuel economy, and features such as Auto Start-Stop system only improve matters. Auto Start-Stop automatically maintains transmission pressure, enabling the driver to get going the moment the vehicle’s engine has been ignited.
